Sword attack in London: 13-year-old boy dead

The 36-year-old assailant was arrested, during the incident, in a London subway station

A 13-year-old boy has died after being attacked by a 36-year-old man at a tube station in north-east London on Tuesday morning.

The 36-year-old allegedly attacked a crowd with a sword, injuring five people. Among them, there was a 13-year-old boy, who was taken to the hospital, however, he did not manage to keep himself alive and died a short time later, as the police announced in its newest update. In addition, two police officers are hospitalized with serious injuries and will need surgery, but their lives are not immediately threatened.

The 36-year-old attacker was arrested after the attack, as he was seen roaming the streets of Hainault with a sword, and according to police reports, the attack was "not targeted".

Residents said they were woken by "many voices", "shrill screams" and a man "covered in blood" outside their homes.

In a statement, police said they were called "shortly before 07:00" to the Hainault district.

"A man with a sword has been arrested," it added in its statement, clarifying that based on the testimonies gathered from the scene of the attack, the suspect attacked passers-by "and two police officers."

"We do not believe there is still a threat" in the neighborhood and "we are not looking for other suspects," police official Aid Eidelekan said in a statement.

"This incident does not appear to be linked to terrorism," he adds.
