Mama, a dying female chimpanzee, gave her widest and warmest smile to her old friend who visited her to say goodbye to him shortly before he died. April 2016.

In the video that sees the light for the first time today of publicity, the 59 year old Mama appears to be curled up, refusing to accept any food or water, in her cage at the Royal Burgers Zoo in the Netherlands.

Completely weakened by an incurable disease, the chimpanzee does not even have the courage to raise its head and seems to be dormant.

Her condition does not seem to change even when an old friend approaches her, Professor Jan Van Huff, who had first created the "community" of chimpanzees at this zoo in 1972 and had spent countless hours caring for Mama.

Mama wakes up from lethargy and gives her widest and warmest smile to her "old friend", reaching out to caress his face, in a touching "goodbye" recorded frame by frame by the staff camera.

Mama, 59, died a week after saying goodbye to the teacher with so much love.
