At least 44 Islamic State militants have been killed and more than 26 others wounded in military operations and bombings by the army against their positions in the southern Philippine province of Maguintanao.

Fighting first broke out on Thursday morning after military forces clashed with 50 members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in a remote area, and continued into the following day, according to Lt. Col. Gary Besana.
