Acts of sabotage that affected the optical fiber networks of several providers, such as Free and SFR, were carried out overnight in six regions of France, a police source said.
The same source added that it is the Bouches-du-Rhône, Aude, Oise, Hérault, Meuse and Drôme regions.
The city of Paris and the Île de France, where the Olympics are held, were not affected.
The affected regions are in the south-east, south-west, east and north of France, according to police.
The "nighttime sabotage" of fiber optic networks does not appear to have led to an outage, but rather to a slowdown. Thus, the Free Pro Twitter account, the professional branch of the Free provider, reported this morning that "as of 2:15 this morning our national network is experiencing a significant slowdown."
These new acts of vandalism come as the rail network is only just recovering from a series of acts of vandalism committed on its tracks on the night of Thursday to Friday, just hours before the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. Fiber optic cables had then been cut and set on fire at various strategic signaling points. These cables pass close to the tracks and guarantee the transmission of safety information for train drivers.
