Four planes of the EU's firefighting fleet have been sent to France from Greece and Sweden at the request of the French authorities and as forest fires rage mainly in southwestern France, the European Commission announced today.
In addition, teams of firefighters from Germany, Poland, Austria and Romania are on their way to assist French firefighters as part of the EU's civil protection mechanism, the Commission said.
"The EU stands in full solidarity when a country is facing an emergency," European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janes Lenarcic said in a statement.
"European solidarity at work!" French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted, expressing his satisfaction with this European aid.
Greece will send two Canadairs and Sweden two Air Tractors "within the day", the French presidency clarified. As for ground forces, Germany is sending 64 firefighters and 24 vehicles, which are expected tonight, he added. Polish reinforcements - 146 firefighters and 49 vehicles - will arrive tomorrow, Friday, at noon.
The Commission also clarified that the EU's Copernicus satellite had been activated by Paris to gather essential data for the first firefighters to intervene in the fire zones.
