The politician Michael Stürzenberger, a well-known critic of Islam, was attacked with a knife earlier today in Germany, during a political event in a square in Mannheim, in Baden-Württemberg. The assailant was neutralized by the police, who shot him.
According to a police announcement, during an event of the "PAX Europa Citizens Movement", the attacker approached the 58-year-old politician from behind and managed to stab him. He even stabbed one of the police officers who tried to stop him in the neck. Other policemen shot the assailant and neutralized him.
The police spokesman did not give more information about the seriousness of the injuries of those involved, but assured that the alert has been lifted at the scene.
Michael Stürzenberger was the press representative of the Christian Social Union (CSU) and then the chairman of the far-right party "Freedom", which has since been dissolved.
From 2013 to 2022 it was monitored by the Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution for, among other things, linking Islam to fascism.
The 58-year-old has been convicted twice, for insulting the police and for inciting hatred and belittling religious teachings.
He is a regular columnist for the Islamophobic blog "Politically Incorrect" and an activist for the Movement of Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West (Pegida).
