Under Argentine law, if convicted, they face between eight and 25 years in prison.

With this change in the indictment, the prosecution considers that Maradona's death was not due to a professional misconduct or negligence on the part of the medical team of "pibe de oro", but considers that the doctors and caregivers of the deceased did nothing to prevent his death.

"After so much injustice, the most important thing is to change the charge to premeditated murder," a member of the San Isidro prosecutor's office and in charge of the investigation told AFP.

This aggravating change in the indictment is linked to the publication in early May of an expert report, which concluded that Maradona had been "abandoned to his fate" by the healthcare team, whose "inadequate and reckless treatment" led to a slow anguish".

Maradona, who suffered from kidney, liver and heart problems, died of a heart attack on November 25, 2020, just weeks after undergoing brain surgery to treat a blood clot.

The seven defendants are neurosurgeon Leopold Luke, psychiatrist Agustina Kosachev, a psychologist, two nurses (a man and a woman) who were on Maradona's side, the supervisor of these nurses and the attending physician home.
