The "Guardian" report brings to light the shocking data regarding the migrant workers who have lost their lives in the construction works of the stadiums in Qatar in view of the 2022 World Cup.
In particular, more than 6.500 people of different nationalities have been killed since 2010, when work began in Qatar, following the takeover of the World Cup. Most come from India, followed by Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
See the details in the table:
Deaths are not only due to accidents, but a large percentage is also attributed to the miserable working and living conditions of workers, who are "stacked" in containers and work for many hours under very high temperatures.
"There is a real lack of clarity and transparency surrounding these deaths," said May Romanos, a Gulf Amnesty International researcher, adding: "There is a need for Qatar to strengthen its occupational health and safety standards."
At the same time, a FIFA spokesman for the same publication commented: "Having taken very strict measures for the safety and health of workers, the frequency of accidents in construction for the Qatar World Cup is very low compared to other similar projects throughout people".
