The Tunisian coast guard recovered nine bodies in the sea off the coast of Mahdia on Monday, state news agency TAP reported.

Nine bodies in a state of decomposition were found in the area of ​​the Tsemba coast and another two in the Salakta coast, the same source clarified.

As the number of migrants trying to reach Europe by sea has risen again this year, shipwrecks with many dead have multiplied in the Mediterranean since the start of the year. The dead who have been identified in Tunisian waters alone have already exceeded 200.

In 2023, according to figures from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), almost 2.500 people died or were reported missing trying to cross the Mediterranean and reach Europe in the hope of finding a better life.

This was a figure increased by 75% compared to 2022.
