Survivors of the Florida massacre will protest against gun ownership

Students who survived the Florida school massacre have announced plans to hold a March 24 rally in Washington demanding tighter gun control, in the wake of the tragedy that has rekindled the U.S. gun dispute.

Nicholas Cruz, a former Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School student in Parkland, North Miami, opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle Wednesday in the school's corridors, killing 17 people, most of them teenagers.

At the age of 19, he was allowed to buy the weapon he used despite the fact that there were signs of violent behavior.

Entitled "March for Our Lives", the Washington demonstration is expected to be a source of inspiration for other mobilizations in the country.

"It will not be against the Republican Party or against the Democrats," Cameron Kaski, a high school student, told ABC television.

"Every politician from both parties who receives money from the NRA (arms lobby) is responsible for this kind of incident," he said, condemning the NRA for defending and promoting this culture of arms.

The powerful lobby opposes any restrictions citing a second amendment to the US Constitution that guarantees the right to bear arms.

The goal is "to create a new regularity that will make it a shame for political officials to accept money from the NRA," Cameron added.
