A photograph of a man trying to escape Cyclone Florence with a wet little kitten perched on his shoulder captures in the most dramatic way what North Carolina residents are living through due to Cyclone Florence in recent days.
According to the latest data, seven people have already lost their lives, among them a mother with a baby, from the passage of the cyclone and dozens more have been trapped by the floods.
And as in any great natural disaster, next to the drama of the loss of human animals comes that of animals, as owners usually try in every way to save them.
The photo of Robert Simmons Jr., as the man is called, with his kitten, who was rightly christened "Survivor" by the American media, was taken by a News & Observer reporter. The photo immediately went viral, from the moment Andrew Carter posted it on Twitter, causing great emotion to those who have seen it.
According to the journalist, the man had been trapped in his house since the previous night due to the rising water level from the floods. Simmons asked his father to come with him on the boat, but he refused as he did not want to leave their house.
"He was very upset that he left his father behind but left with the kitten perched on his neck. "The cat's name: Survivor", the journalist wrote on Twitter.
In an interview with The News & Observer, the man stated that he "loves animals", adding that he could not take the mother of the little cat with him, because "she is a wild cat".
