Tokyo is investigating the possible involvement of a group that supports the Russian government in a cyberattack to disrupt the supply of services from Japanese government websites on Tuesday, public broadcaster NHK reported.
Government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno confirmed the attack and the investigation.
The attack made it temporarily impossible to access online pages, including the digital portal of the electronic government services administration (e-Gov) according to NHK.
The attack left more than 20 websites of four government ministries inaccessible last night, but connections were restored the same day, according to Matsuno.
The Japanese government has not detected any information leakage, as the same government spokesman added.
In attacks of this type, hackers try to flood the internet with a large amount of traffic data in order to paralyze the operation of the pages.
The "Killnet" group, which supports the Russian government, claimed responsibility for the attack on social media, NHK reported.
