Japan: 6,1 magnitude earthquake kills and injures in Osaka

At least 200 people were injured and three were killed, including a nine-year-old girl, in a magnitude 6,1 earthquake that struck Osaka on Monday morning.

The quake struck Osaka in rush hour, disrupting trains, shutting down factories and supplying electricity to at least 170.000 households. The earthquake destroyed pipes of the water supply network.

The Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, announced that the authorities are still in the process of assessing the damage and that the primary concern of his government is to guarantee the safety of citizens.

The epicenter was reported below the Osaka prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. No tsunami alert was issued.

It is recalled that Osaka will host in 2019, the meeting of the Group of Twenty (G20) most developed and growing economies in the world.

On March 11, 2011, a devastating 9,0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami struck Fukushima, northeastern Japan, leaving at least 18.000 dead and causing the worst nuclear disaster in XNUMX years.
