A fire at a nursing home on the Indonesian island of Kelibia has killed sixteen people and injured three others, a firefighter told AFP today.
"We have 16 dead and three (injured) who suffered burns," summarized Jimmy Rotinsoulou, referring to the tragedy that unfolded last Sunday night in Manado.
Many of the victims were found in their rooms, he said. "It was evening, so probably many elderly people were resting" when the fire broke out, he explained.
Authorities hastily removed 12 people alive, taking them to a nearby hospital, Jimmy Rotinsoulou also noted.
Deadly fires are not uncommon in Indonesia, a Southeast Asian archipelago of over 17.000 islands.
Earlier this month, a fire in a seven-story apartment building in the capital Jakarta left 22 dead.
In 2023, at least 12 people died in the eastern part of the country after an explosion at a nickel processing plant.
