A former Boston College student has pleaded guilty today to negligent homicide for her role in the suicide of her boyfriend, whom she repeatedly urged to end her life by verbally, physically and psychologically abusing him.
Inyang Yu, 23, reached an agreement with the prosecutor's office and pleaded not guilty to not serving a prison sentence. Judge Robert Ullman sentenced her to 2,5 years in prison with a 10-year suspension and barred her from making any profit from the much-praised case. If he meets the conditions he will avoid prison.
According to prosecutors, in the last two months of their 18-month relationship, Yu sent 22 text messages to 47.130-year-old Alexander Artoulas on his cell phone, launching a "campaign of abuse" urging him to commit suicide and "vote".
Artula, from Cindar Grove, New Jersey, jumped from a parking lot in May 2019, just hours before his graduation from college.
The case bore many similarities to that of Michelle Carter, who was convicted in 2017 of manslaughter for inciting her teenage boyfriend to commit suicide, with text messages and phone calls.
According to her agreement with the prosecutor, Yu will have to undergo psychotherapy, complete 300 hours of community service and not sell her story for a fee.
