A school bus collided with a truck and overturned on a highway in New Jersey on Thursday, killing two people and injuring about XNUMX others, state officials said.
The accident happened just before 10:30 local time (17:30 Cyprus time) on the Interstate 80 freeway in the Mount Olive community, about a hundred miles west of New York.
The bus, which had departed from the town of Paramous, about 80km from there, carried 45 people, 38 students on a study tour and seven adults accompanying them, according to authorities.
It collided with a garbage truck and overturned. Photos posted on social media sites show the bus dismantled at the edge of the road, with its body separated from the car chassis.
During a press conference given late in the afternoon, authorities confirmed that a teacher and a student were killed, without disclosing their names.
All the other passengers on the bus were injured, some seriously, as was the driver of the garbage truck, said New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, who went to the crash site. So far the causes of the fatal accident remain unknown. Authorities are conducting an investigation.
Cores of psychological support for families were formed. The school authorities announced that they are suspending all educational trips until the end of the year.
