At least 24 people have died and 19 are reported missing after floods hit areas near Tehran since Wednesday, official sources said today.
"Due to heavy rains and floods in the village of Emamzadeh Davud, west, and in the areas of Firuzkouh, Rudehen and Damavad, east of Tehran, 24 people lost their lives," announced the Iranian Red Crescent.
"Search operations to locate the 19 people who are reported missing are continuing," the same source added.
A largely arid country, Iran faces recurring droughts in the current decade, as well as frequent floods caused by torrential rains.
An earlier report by the authorities had seven dead and 14 missing in the tourist village of Emamzadeh Davud and the Damawad area.
When asked by state television, Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi announced today that 18 provinces of the country were affected by the floods, mainly Mazandaran, Alborz, Markazi, Isfahan, Yazd and Tehran provinces.
As he said, in Yazd, in central Iran, "streets were flooded, mainly in the historic city" included in the world cultural heritage of Unesco.
In a short text message sent on Thursday, Iran's Red Crescent advised residents to avoid rivers and move to mountainous areas until Monday.
An earlier storm with heavy rain last week killed 22 people in the southern province of Fars.
In 2019, heavy rains in the south killed more than 75 people and caused more than two billion dollars in damages.
