Authorities have arrested a young student who stripped and stood in her underwear outside her university in Iran last Saturday as a sign of protest against the country's strict Islamic dress code, according to student organizations.

Since then her fate is unknown and no information about her has been made public with organizations expressing fears that she could meet the fate of 22-year-old Makhsa Amini in 2022.

In the videos circulating, the woman can be seen gesturing to her fellow students, many of whom are women and wearing headscarves, while walking around the university's premises.

In another video as well, she can be seen walking down a street, again in just her underwear, before a group of men surround her, tie her up and drive her away in a car.

Amnesty said on Saturday that the woman had been "violently arrested" after protesting the "abusive enforcement" of the dress code at Tehran's Islamic Azad University.

Other reports said the woman had previously been harassed by members of the Basij, an Iranian volunteer paramilitary group, inside the university premises, according to an Iranian student social media channel, Amir Kabir. She claimed that members of the force had ripped off her headscarf and torn her clothes.

Citing eyewitnesses, the state-run Fars news agency reported that the student took off her clothes after two members of the security staff "calmly spoke" to her and warned her that she was breaking the dress code.

The university's director of public relations said the woman suffered from mental health problems.

CNN was unable to independently determine the circumstances behind the incident.

May Sato, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Islamic Republic of Iran, told X that she would "closely monitor this incident, including the response of the Authorities."

Wearing the hijab (or headscarf) in public is mandatory for women under Iran's Islamic law enforced by the country's so-called morality police.

Iranian women can be harshly punished for even minor infractions.

It is recalled that large protests broke out across Iran in 2022 against the dress code following the death of Mahsha Amini, the 2022-year-old woman who died in moral police custody after being arrested for allegedly not wearing her headscarf properly.
