Human dramas begin to unfold as floodwaters recede in Valencia and the figures for the 95 – so far – dead from the DANA storm become known.
One such drama is that of the family of Antonio Tarajona and Lourdes Maria Garcia, who were trapped in the Paiporta area together with their three-month-old daughter, Angelina.
At one point Antonio, Lourdes and little Angelina climbed onto the roof of their car.
The waters, however, were swift, with the result that Antonio was swept away, leaving Lourdes and Angelina behind.
According to a friend of the 34-year-old, Lourdes called her at 20:50 on Wednesday night: "She told me that she would try to hold on as long as possible and asked me to take care of her other two children."
Lourdes' friend walked to the 34-year-old's home, a distance of six kilometers, to pick up her 10-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son. A few hours later came the unpleasant news. As a friend of Lourdes announced, both the 34-year-old woman and her baby were found dead.
Instead Antonio, who was found and rescued, was taken with an injured knee to a sports center in Valencia that is used as a reception center for the affected.
According to the friend of the family, Antonio described how when he was swept away by the waters he managed to grab onto a piece of iron and as a result the rescuers found him there.
Originally from Venezuela, Lourdes has been living in Valencia for the past 5 years.
