Spain is sending the frigate "Cristóbal Colón" to the Eastern Mediterranean to offer protection to Cyprus amid the tension prevailing in recent days in the Middle East.
The Spanish frigate will accompany the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and Greek warships, following the Iranian drone attack on the island's British base in Akrotiri.
The frigate will carry out "protection and anti-aircraft defense" missions and will assist "in any evacuation of civilian personnel," the Spanish Defense Ministry said in a statement.
According to what the website elpais reports, the frigate "Cristóbal Colón", the most modern ship of the Spanish Navy, initially participated in naval operations in the Baltic Sea, but will now head towards the coast of Crete, arriving around March 10.
It is recalled that yesterday, in a speech, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez emphasized that Spain's position is "no to war", clarifying that his country "will not succumb to pressure from the United States to support the US and Israel's war against Iran".
