Italy: Ferrari orders soar amid coronavirus

The five new models presented by Ferrari in 2019 "have been enthusiastically welcomed by the market" and "support our order portfolio for 2020, which is stronger than ever," said Luis Camilleri, CEO of the company before the general shareholders meeting in Amsterdam.

"Nobody knows when the coronavirus-related emergency will end," but "the important thing is to be ready and Ferrari is ready to restart" the production, he added.

He stressed that "the record results of 2019 put the group in a position to face the future."

The group is expected to release quarterly results on May 4. Production at the Maranello plant (in the Emilia-Romagna region) may resume on this day if the Italian authorities give the green light.

Ferrari president John Elkann, heir to the Anielli family, said the group's priority was to ensure the safety of staff. In collaboration with the region, trade unions and scientists, the automotive industry has developed the "Back on Track" plan for the gradual and safe reopening of the Maranello plant.

In anticipation, Ferrari began producing valves for respirators, also participating in the collective effort to fight the pandemic.
