There is a risk that the H5N1 bird flu virus could spread to cows in countries other than the US through migratory birds, a World Health Organization (WHO) official warned today.
"With the virus being carried around the world by migratory birds, there is certainly a risk that cows in other countries will be infected," Wenqing Zhang, head of the WHO's Global Influenza Programme, told a news conference in Geneva.
The official reiterated that the WHO considers the overall risk of this virus to be low for public health.
