Republican President-elect Donald Trump on Monday initiated a second process to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement.
The new occupant of the White House, a notorious climate change denier, kept his word, signing a presidential executive order and a letter to the United Nations to that effect within the first hours of his return to power. The decision, with heavy symbolism, is expected to take effect in a year.
Also, Donald Trump, a few hours after being sworn in as president and assuming power in the US, signed an executive order withdrawing his country from the World Health Organization (WHO).
The Republican accused the WHO of "cheating on us," emphasizing that the American contribution to the international organization was much greater than that of China and accusing it of mismanaging the new coronavirus pandemic and other international public health crises.
