Investing in her dual moral advantage as a former prosecutor and a woman who stands up for the victims of sexism, Kamala Harris launched a scathing attack on Donald Trump. In her first appearance as the unlikely Democratic presidential candidate, Harris lashed out at her opponent, pointing out that he has been convicted of a series of serious crimes, including sexually assaulting a journalist. and author Elizabeth Jean Carroll. On the other hand, Kamala Harris herself was a long-time chief prosecutor in the state of California.
In fact, a short time after this speech, it became known from American media that Kamala Harris managed to complete the necessary number of voters in order to get the Democrats' nomination for the November elections.
By August 7, the Democratic presidential candidate will have been chosen
Meanwhile, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), Jamie Harrison, said on Monday that the party means to have settled on his or her candidate for the presidency by August 7, adding that he is committed that the process will be "open" and "fair".
"When I announced my candidacy I said I wanted to win it. Today I am proud to have secured the broad support required to become the Democratic nominee. I expect soon to officially accept the anointing" said Kamala Harris.
In the same speech in Delaware, Joe Biden intervened, in his first public appearance after contracting the coronavirus. The US president declared that "I will continue to work like hell" as president and for the Harris nomination. At the same time, he warned that "Trump remains a danger" while promising to tour to support his vice president.
By the way, with her post on X (twitter), Elizabeth Jean Carroll, who about a year ago was compensated with 5 million dollars after Trump's conviction for sexual assault against her, pointedly commented that "suddenly she looks a lot like old man". Meaning, of course, that after Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race, Donald Trump doesn't have someone who looks older than him. The 78-year-old Trump is invited to duel with Kamala Harris, who is only 59 years old. The comparison automatically highlights the fact that Donald Trump is the oldest presidential contender in US history.
But of course Kamala Harris herself does not use the age difference with Trump as an argument in her favor. In the speech delivered in Delaware, the headquarters of the campaign staff that she "inherits" from Joe Biden, Harris focused on the heavy criminal record of her rival: Trump was recently convicted of 34 different crimes in the Stormy Daniels case. In his attempt to buy off the silence of the porn star about their inappropriate relationship, Trump fell into heaps of illegalities, financial and tax type. At the same time, at least three more, particularly serious, accusations of conspiracy, interference in election results, etc. are pending against Trump.
On the other hand, Kamala and her communication consultants know that one of her own comparative advantages is that she has always represented legitimacy and justice, that there is no moral censure against her, while as a woman she is by definition entitled to identify with every Trump victim. An "old fashioned" man, against whom numerous allegations of sexist indecency have been leveled from time to time.
It is clear, then, that in essence, Kamala informally opened her election campaign, even before she was officially anointed the presidential candidate by the Democrats, betting on one of her almost irresistible "cards" - moral superiority. Kamala implicitly invites every American woman to vote for her on November 5, posing dilemmas that seem to leave no room for anything but the choice of "Kamala for president," since, based on common sense, no woman will prefer an unrepentant and habitual sexist . Harris herself raised the issue by declaring that “we're not going back. Donald Trump wants to return our country to a time when many of our fellow Americans had unlimited freedoms and rights. But we believe in a better future for all American citizens without exception."
Harris also added that, if elected, Trump would immediately create a favorable tax regime for big business, cut government spending on Social Security and public health care, curtailing whatever benefits the middle class has in the US. By contrast, in Kamala's programme, priority is given to alleviating class inequalities and strengthening the welfare state.
Meanwhile, on the merits and her chances of defeating Trump in a head-to-head showdown, the Democratic nomination is looking increasingly like a formality for Kamala Harris. The number of prominent Democrats expressing acceptance and support for her candidacy is growing, while House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, after some hesitation, aligned herself with Kamala Harris - and with enthusiasm. Pelosi described Harris in her statements as "brilliantly assertive. She is the best to beat Donald Trump."
Also of particular importance is the fact that a number of prominent Democratic officials, said to be possible future candidates for President of the United States, have been quick to publicly declare their support for Kamala Harris. Among them the billionaire governor of Illinois Jay Robert Pritzker, Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, Andy Beshir of Kentucky, Wes Moore of Maryland, Tim Walz of Minnesota, Tony Evers of Wisconsin and others. Some of them were being anointed for the position of Vice President of Kamala, a choice of pivotal importance.
As it became known, in fact, early today, Kamala Harris has now secured the support of a sufficient number of delegates to the convention of the Democratic party - at least 1.967 - which will be held in August in Chicago, and therefore it can be considered definitive that she will be the candidate of the party in the November 5 presidential election.
The news was reported by CNN, while similar information was also provided by sources in Mrs. Harris's campaign to Reuters, while the Associated Press, for its part, estimated that the vice president of the United States has secured the support of 2.214 delegates out of a total of approximately 3.900, in other words, more than the required simple majority.
However, Harris' acceptance among the Democratic party is not universal. The silence on the part of Barack Obama - and Michelle alike - is so far puzzling to say the least. The same goes for George Clooney, among other celebrities who politically choose Democrats.
High-profile and influential figures such as Senator Chuck Schumer and Congressman Hakeem Jeffries have publicly stated that they do not support Kamala's candidacy. On the other hand, the iconic star Barbra Streisand declares in favor of Harris, so do the unconventional director Spike Lee, the singer John Legend and others, while Robert De Niro excoriated Joe Biden for his decision to retire, but without to refer to Kamala Harris.
In terms of fundraising, immediately after it was announced that Biden was retiring and naming Harris as his successor, $81 million poured into her campaign coffers. A record amount for a new US President candidate. Equally important, however, is the fact that a circle of powerful businesswomen is set to sponsor Kamala's effort by bravely financing her election campaign.
The Democrats are speeding up the procedures for the internal election of the presidential candidate, that is, for the formalization of the anointing of Kamala Harris, with a vote on August 7.
