The heat wave that hit Quebec earlier this month killed 70 people, according to the final report of the local health authorities that was published yesterday.
Nearly half of the deaths, 34, were reported in Montreal, a spokeswoman for the state health ministry said.
A heatwave hit eastern Canada for a week in early July, but Quebec alone saw an increase in deaths linked to extreme temperatures.
In 2010 another heat wave killed about 100 people in the Montreal area.
