Infections have risen again to April levels over the past two weeks
Havana, Cuba, is once again in a tight lockdown today following a new outbreak of coronavirus, with authorities once again ordering the closure of restaurants, bars and swimming pools, suspending public transport and banning access to the beaches.
Cuba, whose example was hailed as a rare success story in Latin America for managing the crisis and reducing the epidemic Covid-19, eased lockdown restrictions last month after cases were reduced to just a few per day.
However, infections have risen again to April levels in the past two weeks, with the health ministry announcing 59 cases today and saying the situation could become "uncontrollable" if authorities do not act quickly.
"We are facing a new epidemic outbreak that is endangering our entire population," Cuban Health Minister Jose Angel Portal said today during a regular briefing on the new coronavirus.
Cuba has less than 2.900 cases of the new coronavirus and 88 deaths for a population of 11 million.
One of the largest outbreaks of the virus was found in a religious gathering. However, many of the new cases, 41 of the 59 recorded today, are also imported from Venezuela.
