Twenty-nine people were killed in a stampede at a church rally in the Liberian capital, Monrovia, overnight, the deputy intelligence minister told state radio today.
The incident happened during a Christian overnight stay in New Crow Town, a suburb of the capital, said Deputy Minister Jalaoua Tonpo. The official did not specify what caused the trampling.
"Doctors said 29 people had died and some were in critical condition," Tonpo said. "It's a day of sorrow for the country."
