Much of Gatwick Airport's South Terminal was evacuated on Friday morning due to a "security incident". British police said they found a "suspected prohibited item" in a piece of luggage.
The airport says it is investigating and that the incident is "ongoing", while Sussex Police have sent an explosives disposal team "as a precaution".
In a post on X, the airport said: “The safety of our passengers and staff remains our first priority. We are working hard to resolve the issue as soon as possible."
“I arrived at Gatwick on a routine flight. I went through customs and found out they are evacuating the entire airport," said one passenger. "Even people who passed security are being ushered out. Trains closed and 1.000 people on all roads and parking lots are waiting."
Another said passengers near the gates were told to stay there and not return to the departure hall.
Gatwick Express, the train company that serves passengers at the airport, also issued a statement on the matter, saying that its trains would not approach the facility "until further notice". “This is because the police and emergency services are dealing with an incident at the airport. For now, the station and airport are being evacuated. We would advise you to delay your journey until later this morning.'
