Vassilis Christopoulos, a professor at the University of Southern California, speaks of "war conditions" describing the effects of the deadly fire that has been burning for the third day in Los Angeles.
"We can't go out. There is a problem with water and the environment is toxic," he said.
Los Angeles fire not even 1% contained
Describing the dramatic moments lived by the residents of the American metropolis and the surrounding areas where the fire is spreading destroying everything in its path, the professor told ERTNews and the show "Connections": "The fire is not under control at the moment, not even in 1%. It's on the mountain, not in the city."
In fact, as the professor of Biomedicine from Pasadena, where the people in the wider region are located, has been affected, he said that although the residents of California have experience with forest fires, this particular one is uncontrollable and is something unprecedented.
"We are about 3-4 kilometers from the center of the fire from where it started on Tuesday night. The strong winds with speeds that exceed 150 to 200 kilometers leveled everything and unfortunately it was also the spark to start this disaster" said the Greek scientist.
Contaminated water
Wanting to describe how they experience the difficult situation, he said that "the water is polluted. We can't even use it for brushing teeth or cooking. Only bottled water can be used."
"The situation resembles a pandemic. Everyone wears a mask. we are forbidden to use the water because it is contaminated," he noted, adding that they cook with bottled water.
