One person was killed when Madagascar police used tear gas against opposition protesters protesting against the new election law, which they say is designed to bar their candidate from running in this year's presidential election.
Olivat Rakoto, director of the Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona Hospital in the capital Antananarivo, said 17 people were injured between 12.00 noon and 15.00 pm local time.
"A man came but there was nothing we could do for him when he arrived," Rakoto said, referring to one of the 17 dead, who was taken to hospital.
Supporters of Mark Ravalomanana, the island nation's former leader, say the new election law is designed to prevent him from running in the election.
Hundreds of protesters gathered in the center of the capital early on to protest against laws passed by parliament earlier this month.
