Donald Trump repeated yesterday, Thursday, his threat to impose "100%" tariffs on the Brics group, after he stated again that starting tomorrow, Saturday, he will impose 25% tariffs on products imported into the US from Mexico and Canada.
"The idea that the Brics members are trying to move away from the dollar and we are sitting idly by is OVER," the US president stressed in a post on Truth Social.
“We will demand a commitment from these seemingly hostile countries that they will neither create a new Brics Currency, nor support any other Currency to replace the strong US Dollar, or face 100% tariffs,” Trump added in his post, which was almost identical to one he had made on November 30.
"There is no way the Brics will replace the US Dollar in International Trade or anywhere else, and any country that tries to do so should say welcome to tariffs and goodbye to America!", he stressed.
The Brics group includes 10 countries, including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
The BRICS countries say they want to limit Western dominance in the world. They do not have a common currency, but discussions in this direction have intensified after Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the imposition of Western sanctions on Moscow.
However, at the Brics summit in late October, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the idea of a common currency "has not yet matured."
Shortly after being sworn in as US president, Trump announced that he wanted to impose 1% tariffs on products imported into his country from Mexico and Canada, two countries that signed a free trade agreement with Washington during his first term, starting February 25.
The Republican wants to use the tariffs to pressure Mexico and Canada to help the US limit the entry of drugs, mainly fentanyl, as well as illegal immigrants into the country.
Yesterday, Thursday, Trump confirmed his intention to impose tariffs on the two neighboring countries of the US and added that he would decide overnight whether to exempt the oil they produce from the measure.
