Big bang in London: At least two dead (PICTURE)

A large explosion in a building in the South Southol area took place on Wednesday afternoon in West London.

The blast was reportedly caused by a leak in a gas pipeline that connected a barber shop and a mobile phone shop on King Street to the mains. Immediately after, a fire broke out and part of the building collapsed.

A baby and four adults, who were trapped, have already been rescued, while the Fire Department earlier confirmed the evacuation of adjacent buildings of 14 people and two children.

Forty firefighters rushed to the scene with six vehicles, which proceeded to extinguish the fire and then began the search for people who were either trapped or lost their lives.

A spokesman for the Fire Department confirmed that there were deaths from the blast, initially avoiding mentioning a number, as the firefighters' operation was ongoing. A few minutes later, he confirmed that two dead bodies had been found, while the investigation continues.

"The blast damaged shops and adjacent buildings," he said.
