Mei-Erdogan was told by phone about Jerusalem

Theresa May and Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a telephone conversation on Monday night to discuss the issue of Jerusalem, mainly in the wake of Trump's decision to recognize it as the capital of Israel.

A Downing Street spokesman said the British prime minister had stressed to the Turkish president that London disagreed with the US president's decision and said the move did not help prospects for peace in the region.

The two leaders reaffirmed their support for a two-state solution in the region, and Ms. May added that the status of Jerusalem should be determined in the context of a negotiated solution between Israelis and Palestinians. As he said, in the end the city should be the joint capital of the state of Israel and the state of Palestine.

"The prime minister noted the importance of continuing to work with the United States to encourage Washington to submit proposals that will reactivate the peace process," he said.

According to him, the two leaders had the opportunity "to refer to the significant strengthening of ties between the two countries since the Prime Minister's visit to Turkey at the beginning of the year". They also noted the "positive" recent visit of British Prime Minister Gildirim to Britain.

They made special reference to the deepening of cooperation in the defense industry, including through bilateral cooperation in the construction of TFX fighter jets.

Ms May and Mr Erdogan agreed to meet closely at the earliest opportunity
