Two tourists, a German and an Indian, were killed and two Germans and a Dutch woman were injured in an exchange of fire between rival gangs in Mexico today, the prosecutor's office said.

"Conflict"

The shootings took place in the coastal city of Tulum (southeast) on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

"Two foreigners were killed and three others were injured in an exchange of fire inside a store," Quintana Roux, the state prosecutor's office in Tulum, one of Mexico's top tourist resorts, said on Twitter.

The prosecutor's office then informed the French Agency of the nationalities of the victims.

It is a "clash" between rival gangs engaged in drug trafficking, the prosecutor's office added.
One of the victims "died on the spot and the other, in the hospital".

One of the perpetrators has been arrested, said Tulum mayor Marciano Dzul.

Stray bullets

The five victims were hit by stray bullets during the exchange of fire, and have nothing to do with the criminals, the mayor added to the television network Milenio.

The city is experiencing a wave of violence due to clashes between drug traffickers, the mayor acknowledged.

The 15th largest economy in the world, and one of the top ten most visited countries in the world, Mexico is also a country with very high crime rates.

In 2020, despite the pandemic, more than 36.000 homicides were officially recorded, most of which were linked to clearing accounts between rival gangs.
