Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Monday demanded that Chicago police change the rules of engagement during the chase of suspected pedestrians by its members, following the death of a 13-year-old by a police officer in such a chase a week ago.
Adam Toledo was shot in the chest by an unnamed police officer at around 02:30 a.m. March 29 in Little Village, West Side, according to the Chicago Police Department (CPD). .
According to the police version, the thirteen-year-old was armed with a pistol. Police officers began to persecute the teenager and a young man because it had been informed that in the area heard gunfire at the CPD.
"Tragedies like this underscore the urgency of reforming the CPD's policy of persecution of pedestrians - not tomorrow, now," Ms Lightfoot told a news conference on Monday.
As the issue of police violence becomes more pressing in the United States, the incident has brought back to the forefront calls for reforms in the way law enforcement forces operate in the country's third largest urban center.
Chicago police have been under the microscope since 2014, when a white police officer shot and killed a black teenager.
He was later convicted of murder.
Video of the incident prompted the US Department of Justice to launch an investigation, which concluded that Chicago police were systematically violating civil and civil rights, using disproportionate violence and racist discrimination.
No video of last Monday's incident has been released yet.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) stressed that it is required to release footage from the camera worn by the police officer within 60 days. She stressed that the plans have "noise" her.
Lori Lightfoot also promised to find out exactly how the teenager was found carrying a weapon.
He said he had instructed police to use DNA, fingerprints and other techniques to determine who had given him the pistol.
