"Our party is entering the difficult journey much stronger," said Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who is incarcerated in Silibria prison, after the extraordinary congress of the Republican People's Party (CHP).
"I congratulate Mr. Özgür Özel who was re-elected President at the extraordinary congress of our Republican People's Party as well as our party executives. Our party enters the difficult journey much stronger. We will continue to fight with dedication and determination for the construction of the New Turkey. May our path be open," Ekrem İmamoğlu said via social media.
Ozgur Ozel, the sole candidate, was re-elected as CHP President with 1171 votes. 1276 people voted in the elections and 105 votes were declared invalid. Ozel's statement that "we will reckon with the Junta and save Turkey" became the main headline on the front page of "Sozcu" today.
Meanwhile, a protest will be held in Istanbul's Sisli on Wednesday and in Samsun over the weekend. A rally is being organized in Izmir, considered the stronghold of the main opposition, on May 19. "It will be the biggest rally in history," said Özel.
Dilek Imamoglu, wife of Ekrem Imamoglu, who was rumored to enter politics after his pretrial detention, clarified on the T24 channel that "Ekrem is the politician of our house and we, as his family, will continue to support him on this journey."
"I have not changed as Dilek. What I said last year still applies. I have always been sensitive about my country, the environment and the world. From now on, I will worry about the problems of my country and work especially in the field of social responsibility. But Ekrem is the politician of our house," she said.
