A 43-year-old German man convicted of pedophilia is considered by Scotland Yard to be suspected in connection with the May 2007 abduction of then-4-year-old Madeleine McCann in Portugal.

The new suspect lived in an old farmhouse about three kilometers from the McCann family's lodge in Praia da Luz on the Algarve coast.

The 43-year-old, who was not named by British police when the new development was announced, reportedly left the farmhouse about a year before the abduction, but authorities believe he was not far behind.

He is described as white, about 1,80 tall, with short blond hair. He was 30 at the time.

Police have seized a caravan believed to be in use and are investigating.

The suspect is currently serving a long prison sentence in a German prison.

British police are asking anyone who knows anything about the suspect's actions at the time to contact authorities.

Madeline's British parents, Kate and Jerry McCann, welcomed the new development in their research.
