The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis.
The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to the three scientists "for their discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunneling and energy quantization in an electrical circuit."
Three scientists who connected theory with experimental applications
"This year's Nobel Prize in Physics provides opportunities for the development of the next generation of quantum technology, including quantum cryptography, quantum computers and quantum sensors," the Nobel Committee said in its announcement.
All three winners are based in the United States.
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis
The discoveries of the three scientists bridge the gap between abstract quantum theory and practical applications in everyday technology, opening new avenues for the development of quantum computing and other advanced technologies.
Together, the three of them connected theory with experimental applications, enabling the development of quantum computing technologies and other advanced devices.
The award comes with a cash prize of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately 1,2 million US dollars), which will be shared equally between the three laureates.
The official award ceremony will take place on December 10, 2025, on the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the founder of the prizes.
