Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg, from whom the "school climate strike" began, was nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, became known today by one of the three Norwegian MPs who nominated her for the award.
"We proposed Greta Thunberg because climate change, if not contained, will be the root cause of wars, conflicts and the influx of migrants in the future," said Freddie Andre Evstegord.
"Greta Thunberg has started a mass movement in which I see perhaps the most basic contribution to peace," he added.
The 16-year-old Swedish activist has become a symbol of the fight against climate change, calling on students to go on a "global school strike" every Friday to step up action to tackle the problem.
"It is obviously an honor and a great pleasure to be nominated for such a great award," she told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. "It's unbelievable and a little strange," he added.
Tunberg was nominated by three members of the Socialist Left before the deadline for nominations for the award, which was January 31st. This means that her candidacy for the Nobel Peace Prize 2019, which will be given on October 11, is valid.
