J.D. Vance and his wife also on stage
The Trump couple danced to the rhythm of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" played by the United States Marine Corps Band.
Shortly after, Vice President J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha, joined them on stage. The couples then danced with military personnel, as is customary.
Before leaving the stage, Donald Trump was given a sword to cut the event's giant cake. "Does anyone want some cake?" he asked happily.
The American president then danced, holding the sword in his hand, when the song "YMCA" began to play from the speakers.
The event was the first of three inauguration balls that Trump and Melania would attend that evening.
Balls are a long-standing tradition of inauguration night in Washington, capping off a long day of ceremonies and activities on the first day of the presidency. The country's first official inauguration ball was held in 1809 for former President James Madison and his wife, Dolley, according to the White House Historical Association.
