The UN humanitarian coordinator in Syria, Jan Eggeland, today called for access to the eastern city of Duma, where he said 80.000 to 150.000 civilians had "knelt down" after years of siege and heavy fighting.
Russian-backed Syrian government forces have recaptured almost all of eastern Guta, the last major insurgent stronghold on the outskirts of Damascus, in a major offensive launched in February.
They are now negotiating with an armed group inside the Duma, the last area still under the control of the armed opposition, Eggeland told a news conference in Geneva.
"We hope that the agreement will have the effect that the people who choose it can stay, that those who lay down their arms will be granted amnesty, but also that those who choose it will have the opportunity to leave the Duma," he said.
