Donald Trump expressed his disagreement with what the Prime Minister of Greenland said yesterday, who made it clear that the island chooses Denmark over the United States, in statements he made to reporters on Monday.
When asked to comment, the US president said: "I disagree with him. I don't know who he is, I don't know anything about him, but this is going to be a big problem for him."
It is noted that today, the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland will be at the White House for talks with J.D. Vance and Marco Rubio, with the aim of de-escalating the crisis regarding the Arctic island, an autonomous region belonging to Denmark and which Trump wants to place under US control.
What could be Trump's real goal for Greenland?
According to Politico, Trump's real goal may not be related to security issues or Greenland's natural resources, as has been suggested at times. The publication points out that, if the interest was in the island's minerals, Denmark had for years offered the United States the possibility of investing in Greenland, a proposal that Washington did not take up.
Accordingly, if the main motivation was to limit the influence of China and Russia in the Arctic, the solution could be simpler: the US could officially strengthen its military presence on the island, with the consent of Copenhagen, without raising the issue of sovereignty.
In Brussels, however, a different, more personal interpretation is gaining ground. As a European diplomat summarizes, Donald Trump wants to go down in history as the man who made America "greater," even in geographical terms, giving the Greenland debate a strongly symbolic and political character.
