US President Donald Trump urged his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Sunday to "cease fire" and reach an agreement with Ukraine to end the war that has been going on since February 2022.
"I want a ceasefire. Sit down at the table and sign the deal," Trump told reporters, referring to the Russian president on the tarmac of Morristown Airport in Bedminster, New Jersey (east).
At the same time, Donald Trump said he believes his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky is moving to abandon the goal of recovering the Crimean peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014, an assessment in stark contrast to a recent statement by the Ukrainian leader.
"I think so. Crimea, that was 12 years ago," Trump said when asked if he thought Zelensky was willing to "abandon" the peninsula.
Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014, when Barack Obama was US president.
Regarding his meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Vatican yesterday, the American president said it went well and that the coming days will show whether there has been progress.
Asked about the change in his attitude after the confrontation they had at the White House, Trump said: "I see him calmer, I think he understands the situation, I think he wants to reach an agreement."
Trump then said he was very disappointed with Russia and called on Vladimir Putin to stop the hostilities and "make a deal."
