German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the Russian military operation that began today in Ukraine a "flagrant violation" of international law and spoke of a "black day" for the whole of Europe.
"Germany condemns in the strongest possible way" the attack ordered in a "ruthless" manner by Russian President Vladimir Putin and expresses "solidarity with Ukraine and its citizens".
He added that he would discuss with Germany's partners in the European Union and the G7 the measures the West has warned it would impose on Russia in the event of an attack.
