According to the Afghan press, Mohammad was forcibly removed from his home by a group of gunmen during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha. After initially denying any involvement in Mohammad's death, the Taliban admitted after the videos were released that their fighters had killed him. "He was an acting police officer responsible for the deaths of many people," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told AFP. "He was not a comedian, he fought against us in many battles. "He tried to escape, forcing our men to shoot him."

Shailab, a Kandahar police officer who was stationed with Mohammad at a checkpoint, told AFP that Mohammad had never been involved in a fight and was better known to his colleagues for his talent as a comedian than as a police officer. "His son called me to tell me that the Taliban had come to his house and taken him," Silab said. "The next day, his body was found with his hands tied behind his back."

The video of his arrest and the announcement of his death caused emotion on social media. "His barbaric and absurd killing shocked Afghans and reminded them that the Taliban have no tolerance," a Twitter user stressed a few months ago. "The Taliban are opposed to talent (…), they want Afghanistan to be the country of violent people who never laugh," according to another tweet.

The Taliban have been accused of hiding behind a wave of targeted killings in recent months, killing mostly officials, journalists, judges and non-governmental activists.
