At least 24 people were killed and about 50 wounded across Ukraine today as Russia launched a barrage of missiles against Kiev and other Ukrainian cities, officials said today.

The Russian attack on the Ukrainian capital today is one of the worst in two years of war, said the mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko.

"It is one of the worst attacks. You can see: it's a children's hospital," he told Reuters, standing near the heavily damaged building. At least seven people were killed in the city during the attack, authorities said.

The attack hit a children's hospital

Russia launched a barrage of missiles against Kiev and other Ukrainian cities today in an unusual early-morning attack that killed at least 20 people across the country and hit a major children's hospital, officials said.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian forces fired more than 40 missiles targeting various areas and causing damage to infrastructure, commercial buildings and homes in different Ukrainian cities.

Authorities in the city of Kiev said that at least 7 people were killed and 25 injured in the strike in the Ukrainian capital.

According to Zelensky, there are people trapped under the rubble of a children's hospital in Kiev, which was damaged by today's Russian strikes.

"One of Europe's most important children's hospitals," was destroyed. "There are people under the rubble and the exact number of victims is currently unknown," Zelensky wrote on Platform X. "Russia cannot claim that it does not know where its missiles fall and must be held accountable for all crimes her," he added.

In Kriviy Rih, Zelenskiy's hometown, 10 people were killed and 31 injured, Mayor Oleksandr Vilkul said.

Three more people were killed in Pokrovsk, eastern Ukraine, when rockets hit an industrial facility, the Donetsk regional governor said.

"All services have been mobilized to save as many people as possible," Zelensky said on the Telegram messaging app. "And the whole world should use all its resolve to put a definitive end to the Russian strikes."

Russia has repeatedly denied targeting civilians.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the attack on the capital is one of the worst since the Russian invasion in February 2022. He added that the main children's hospital in the city was damaged in the attack. Parents holding babies in their arms came out into the street, in a state of shock and crying.

"We heard an explosion and then rubble fell on us," Svitlana Kravchenko, 33, told Reuters after she and her husband Viktor emerged from the shelter.

Their two-month-old baby was unharmed, but Svitlana was injured, while their car was completely buried under the rubble of a destroyed building on the opposite side of the forecourt where the hospital's main wing is located.

"It was scary. I couldn't breathe, I was trying to cover my baby. I was trying to cover him with this cloth so he could breathe," she said.

Local and regional authorities said industrial units, infrastructure, residences and commercial buildings were damaged in Kyiv, Krivi Rykh, Dnipro, Pokrovsk, Kramatorsk and other cities.

Then another Russian strike killed at least four people at a Kyiv medical center, Ukrainian authorities said, hours after a children's hospital in another district was hit.

“There were reports of debris falling in the Dnipro district. A medical center was partially damaged. Four deaths and three injuries were reported," Ukrainian emergency services said on Telegram, while Andriy Yermak, chief of staff of the Ukrainian president, said via Telegram that it was a "new Russian strike" on a medical center. This institution is located on the left bank of the Ukrainian capital.
