Von Gething announced his resignation as Welsh Prime Minister shortly before noon.
In his statement he says that he realizes that his pursuit of a renewal and reconstruction of Wales under his own leadership is no longer feasible.
His resignation comes just hours after the resignation of four ministers in the devolved government, who said the Prime Minister should have also left his post.
Citing a lack of confidence in their leader, the Welsh Government saw the resignations of Mick Antoniw, Attorney General and Government Legal Adviser, Julie James, Minister for Housing and Local Communities, Leslie Griffiths, Minister for Culture and Social Justice and Jeremy Miles, Minister for the Economy , Energy and Welsh Language.
The quitters had branded Mr Gething's position as head of the Welsh Labor government "unsustainable", citing his defeat last month in a confidence vote.
That vote was prompted by the revelation that Mr Gething had received a £200.000 donation from a company convicted of environmental offences. The Welsh First Minister had dismissed the process in the Welsh parliament, known as the Sened, as a "gimmick" and remained in place until today.
Von Gething, 50, only became the first black leader of a European country in March when he was elected by the Welsh Labor Party to replace the resigned Mark Drakeford.
The schedule of the internal party process to replace Mr. Gething is now awaited.
