The leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Saxony-Anhalt, Andre Pogenburg, has resigned following insulting remarks in which he described the Turks as "camels" who should return "to their huts and to their huts". ».
Pogenburg, 42, made the remarks on February 14, in a speech at a political rally in which he also called the Turks of Germany an "anti-patriotic mob."
He announced in a statement that he would step down on March 31st following "terrible media pressure" in the wake of his speech.
He accused the media of putting words in his mouth that he did not say, but without specifically denying some of his most offensive comments published in the press.
"It is not a problem for me to face this pressure alone, but I want members, colleagues in the parliamentary group and party colleagues to avoid it," Pogenburg said.
"AfD success is always more important than individual success or emotion, so I think it 's fair for me to take a step back right now," he added.
The far-right politician was shocked in June when he sent messages with the slogan "Germany for the Germans" often used by the neo-Nazi National Democratic Party (NPD).
