At least 93 people are still missing after floods swept through southeastern Spain eight days ago.

At least 93 people are still missing after the floods that swept south-east Spain eight days ago, according to the latest official tally, released on Wednesday by justice in Valencia.

Last Tuesday night, a higher court announced that 89 people were wanted after the devastating floods and landslides, which left behind at least 219 dead, mostly in Valencia, based on accounts released by local and national authorities.

With a more recent announcement, made public last night, the same court informed that four more disappearances were officially recorded by the police and gendarmerie, which increases the number of people wanted to 93.

This number "may increase or decrease, depending on new identifications of people who have died, new reports of disappearances, or detections of people who are alive," he explained.

On the ground, search operations continued yesterday, mainly in underground parking lots and streams in the suburbs of Valencia, the area hardest hit by the floods and landslides.

The 15.000 military and police officers deployed in the area also continued to participate in the removal of debris and the clearing of damaged roads and infrastructure so that they could either be reopened or restored.

Faced with the scale of the disaster, the government of Pedro Sanchez announced yesterday Tuesday emergency aid of 10,6 billion euros, both to provide direct aid to flood-affected residents and businesses, and to finance recovery projects by municipalities.

Yesterday Wednesday, the European Investment Bank (EIB), which has been led since January by the former Minister of Economy of Spain Nadia Calvinho, announced the granting of financial assistance of 900 million euros for the reconstruction.
