Rescuers continue their efforts amid mud, drifted cars, uprooted trees, rubble and other portable objects.

Many of the residents are returning to their homes with rakes and shovels in hand trying to salvage what they can.

Authorities were preparing residents that the number of victims would increase
In the previous hours, the Spanish authorities were preparing the residents for the fact that the number of dead will rise as dozens of people are missing.

The exact number of the missing remains unknown.

The tragedy is already the worst flood-related disaster in Spain's modern history while the death toll is currently the highest for a single country in Europe since 209 people died in floods in Romania in 1970.

The death toll has angered residents, with some accusing authorities of not warning people early enough of the storm's dangers.
